Alcohol is such a commonly used substance that unfortunately people often forget the possible repercussions of its use, and also the fact that it might not be a good idea to mix it with many other substances.
One example of interactions you should know about are alcohol and steroids. What are the side effects of alcohol and steroids? There are two types of steroids that are commonly discussed. The first are anabolic steroids, which are like male sex hormones and they can be given by doctors to help patients who have delayed puberty, or who have lost significant amounts of muscle because of conditions like cancer and AIDS.
One widely prescribed example of a corticosteroid is prednisone, which can help treat a range of autoimmune conditions such as arthritis and lupus. Anabolic steroids can be very dangerous and can have serious side effects. Some of the side effects of anabolic steroids can include jaundice, high blood pressure and cholesterol, kidney tumors, acne, testicle shrinkage, reduced sperm count and infertility, liver tumors, baldness, the development of breasts in men and prostate cancer.
In women who take steroids, there are possible side effects including changes in menstrual cycle, deepening of the voice, male pattern baldness and increased facial hair. Anabolic steroids are also linked to emotional and mood problems, including increased violence and aggression, paranoia, irritability, depression and impaired judgment. However, they can affect certain reward and emotional pathways with long-term use.
So what about alcohol and steroids? They may either be taking a steroid medicine or taking anabolic steroids and simply decide to drink at the same time without thinking about it.
However, when people use some types of steroids, they might also mix them with alcohol in order to curb the negative effects of coming off the steroids, which can trigger depression.
If someone is combining alcohol and steroids as a way to stave off the negative emotional effects of the steroids, they may actually be doing more harm than good. There is some research showing that when you drink it increases the presence of estrogen in your body, and that can lead you to feel even worse than you would have otherwise. Long-term steroid use is also associated with kidney and liver damage, and if you drink, particularly in excess it also harms these organs.
So, in addition to liver or kidney damage, what are the side effects of alcohol and steroids? Other side effects of mixing alcohol and steroids can include dehydration, high blood pressure, depression, chest pain, allergic reactions and gastrointestinal problems. Also, as was touched on above, some of the side effects of using steroids on their own can include rage, volatility, and emotional instability. These symptoms can all be exacerbated when you mix alcohol and steroids. So, what are the side effects of alcohol and steroids prescribed to treat conditions like asthma?
Your doctor may advise you not to combine alcohol and steroids prescribed for a health condition because it could be rough on your liver as well. You should always speak with your doctor about drinking and any medicine you may be on.
Don't wait another day. Help is a phone call away. Steroids can be looked at in two ways. There are the steroids that are prescribed by doctors for certain medical conditions such as asthma. There are also steroids that people use to gain muscle and body mass.
Most of the dangerous side effects of alcohol and steroids are related to anabolic steroids. Have more questions about Alcohol abuse?
