Sex steroid hormone metabolism and prostate cancer.Carcinoma of the prostate is the most frequently sex steroid hormone metabolism and prostate cancer malignancy and the second leading cause of death as a result of cancer in men in the United States and in many other Western countries. Notwithstanding the importance of this malignancy, little is understood about its causes. The epidemiology of prostate cancer strongly suggests that environmental factors, particularly diet and nutrition, are major determinants of risk for this disease, and evidence is mounting that there are important genetic risk factors for prostate cancer. Human prostate carcinomas are often androgen sensitive and react to hormonal therapy by temporary how long until you see effects of anavar, followed by relapse to an androgen-insensitive state. The combined action of androgens and estrogens-specifically their balance-may play a role in prostate carcinogenesis, but existing evidence is sparse and inconsistent. We investigated associations between serum sex steroid hormones, including estrogen metabolites, and risk of aggressive prostate cancer. Only men with serum testosterone and sex hormone-binding globulin measured previously were eligible. Risk of aggressive prostate cancer was strongly inversely associated with estradiol: Individual estrogen metabolites were unrelated to risk.
Our findings suggest that sex steroid hormones, specifically the estrogen-androgen balance, may be important in the development of aggressive prostate cancer. Improved understanding of the hormonal etiology of prostate cancer is critical for prevention and therapeutic interventions.
