First I was told up to 7 days, then I got transfered and I was told up to 2 weeks! If you think about it, 2 weeks to process a return is a bit ridiculous and after the return is processed you have to add another 2 to 3 business days for you to even get your money back.
They then told me that there was nothing they could do for me and that if it went beyond the 2 weeks that I needed to call them back. Amazon use to have great customer service, but I find it typically is based on who you get because now it is really hit or miss.
Costco hands down has the best return policy and they have the best customer service. Never any issues and more than a few times they reimbursed me and let me keep the product for free. They are very customer service oriented. I doubt that they always have someone checking every product. Also, having worked at Best Buy customer service, I will agree that their policy is confusing, but there are reasons.
Purchasing a camera, taking it on vacation, and then returning it. You forgot to mention that if your product is indeed defective there is no restocking fee. We can return labor under extreme circumstances and with manager permission.
The only bad experience I can remember lately is with Amazon. I still have the items in my closet, unopened. I had no way to know what I would need and Amazon was unwilling to listen to what I thought were reasonable mitigating circumstances.

I disagree with your criticism of Apple, they do stand behind their product. I just had a 3. I suppose it is an easy target for criticizing return policies, as they have a limited selection of products all of which would be basically worthless if return after use.
